Digital
Interactive Audio Video Recorder - DIVACE
If
you are teaching/learning in a multimedia PC environment
running on a local area network (LAN), Divace
is the most comprehensive tool ever available
to explore digital media from a media server,
the Internet or a hard disk. Unlike other media
players on the market, Divace is not only a digital
player but a recorder as well, thus opening unlimited
avenues for instructional usage.
Divace
plays back Internet clips, just like RealPlayer
or MediaPlayer do. You can either go to a web-site
from the Explorer or Navigator, click on the audio
or video clip and Divace will start playing the
streaming audio or video material. Or, you can
Open Location from the File Menu which will take
you to the specified web-site's URL.
Extensive
Digital File Format Support
Digitized
media come in various formats. Most digital players
work with a limited number of those formats. Divace,
on the other hand, supports an extremely wide
spectrum of digital file formats. This gives you
a possibility of selecting learning resources
from various sources without limiting your choices
to one or two file formats. From Windows sound
format .wav or QuickTime .mov video to MPEG layer
3 type of audio compression, Divace's sophisticated
design brings you a wealth of file formats
no other player matches.
Name
and Save Bookmarks
While
listening to and watching authentic target materials
in digital form, the user will occasionally come
across passages they will find difficult to comprehend.
Or, they may wish to return to a certain segment
of the file for re-listening or even reviewing.
They may even want to "mark" more than
one location on the file to re-listen or review
them over and over again. Divace comes with ten
bookmarks that can be set anywhere on the file.
A click on a specific bookmark will take the student
to the marked section in no time at all. Moreover,
it is not only the sound segment that the student
will get back to. The video picture will also
return to the marked section. Do you still remember
going to bookmarks set on a cassette or searching
for a specific section on a video tape? How much
time did the procedure take? With the bookmarks
on Divace, various sections of audio or video
can be played hundreds of times with just a click
of the mouse. And, a user can name and save the
bookmarks for immediate access later on. Just
right click on a bookmark number and enter a name
in the editing window. If you are a teacher, you
will find this very useful, as you can mark a
certain section of the file, name it and save,
and then during your next teaching session -
start the playback of the file from this particular
location. It's that simple!
Video
Playback with Simultaneous Audio Recording
While
the digital audio or video is being played, the
student may simultaneously record their input
on the Student track. For example, the student
may produce a personalized voice-over commentary
to a news video clip or act as an interpreter
by recording oral translation simultaneous. The
total file (video clip + student's input) can
then be played back over and over again, saved,
accessed by other students for comparisons with
their own recordings etc.
Text
Synchronization
Divace
allows for synchronizing text (subtitles) with
sound. The teacher/student may type in the transcript
of the audio recording corresponding to the whole
file or specific segments only. While listening
to the audio the student may follow the written
transcript. This can be useful for improving vocabulary
acquisition and its better retention.
Audio
Active Comparative Corrective
These
exercises have the following structure. The student
listens to stimulus recorded on the Program track,
e.g. "Have you been to Paris recently?"
The student gives a response, "Yes, I was".
Within 3-5 seconds, the correct answer is heard
on the program track, "Yes, I have".
In the more extended version, the student may
repeat the correct answer, after which the correct
response on the Program track is given for the
second time.
Digitize
media
If
you are planning to implement networked technology
in language instruction, or you are already teaching
in a client/server environment, you will no doubt
need to produce language learning materials. Stored
on a server, these materials will be accessed
by students. Divace enables digitization of resources
that you may already have in an analog format.
For instance, your audio cassettes and videos
can easily be converted from analog-to-digital
with the Divace, provided your computer comes
with the suitable hardware. Minimum requirements
are a multimedia computer with sound card, microphone
and headphones for audio
digitization, and, additionally, a video capturing
card for video conversion.

Digital Interactive Audio Video Recorder
DIVACE
is a digital two-track recorder. It means that
while a digital audio or video file is being played
back from a Program track, a student may simultaneously
record their voice on a Student track.
